Vulnerabilities in modern computers leak passwords and sensitive data.
Meltdown and Spectre exploit critical vulnerabilities in modern processors . These hardware vulnerabilities allow programs to steal data which is currently processed on the computer. While programs are typically not permitted to read data from other programs, a malicious program can exploit Meltdown and Spectre to get hold of secrets stored in the memory of other running programs. This might include your passwords stored in a password manager or browser, your personal photos, emails, instant messages and even business-critical documents.
Meltdown and Spectre work on personal computers, mobile devices, and in the cloud. Depending on the cloud provider's infrastructure, it might be possible to steal data from other customers.
Meltdown breaks the most fundamental isolation between user applications and the operating system. This attack allows a program to access the memory, and thus also the secrets, of other programs and the operating system.
If your computer has a vulnerable processor and runs an unpatched operating system, it is not safe to work with sensitive information without the chance of leaking the information. This applies both to personal computers as well as cloud infrastructure. Luckily, there are

Spectre breaks the isolation between different applications. It allows an attacker to trick error-free programs, which follow best practices, into leaking their secrets. In fact, the safety checks of said best practices actually increase the attack surface and may make applications more susceptible to Spectre
Spectre is harder to exploit than Meltdown, but it is also harder to mitigate. However, it is possible to prevent specific known exploits based on Spectre through software patches.
Meltdown was independently discovered and reported by three teams:
Spectre was independently discovered and reported by two people:
Most certainly, yes.
Probably not. The exploitation does not leave any traces in traditional log files.
While possible in theory, this is unlikely in practice. Unlike usual malware, Meltdown and Spectre are hard to distinguish from regular benign applications. However, your antivirus may detect malware which uses the attacks by comparing binaries after they become known.

The European water research project DESSIN demonstrates and promotes innovative solutions for water scarcity and water quality related challenges demonstrates a methodology for the valuation of ecosystem services (ESS).
DESSIN is centred around five demonstration sites with special focus on urban areas across Europe, where solutions are being tested and validated. All information and products resulting from the project will be introduced on this website.
The paper „Getting into the water with the Ecosystem Services Approach: The DESSIN ESS evaluation framework“ from various DESSIN authors has been published online at the Ecosystem Services Journal. The article gives a great overview of one of the main outcomes of the DESSIN project, the ESS Evaluation Framework.
From the abstract: “Driven by Europe’s pressing need to overcome its water quality and water scarcity challenges, the speed of innovation in the water sector is outpacing that of science. The methodologies available to assess the impact of innovative solutions to water-related challenges remain limited and highly theoretical, which sets boundaries on their application and usefulness to water practitioners.

The Llobregat demo of the European project DESSIN has shown that injecting pre-potable water into aquifers is a feasible technique to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of groundwater recharge. This European project, in which 21 partners participate, has been successfully tested in the ETAP of Sant Joan Despí (Aigües de Barcelona) and has managed to improve both the quality and quantity of water in the Baix Llobregat aquifer. The DESSIN project is coming to an end and it is a pleasure for us to present our last magazine to you. It gives an overview of our main results and the solutions tested and validated at the DESSIN demonstration sites in Norway, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. Futhermore, the DESSIN Ecosystem Services Evaluation Tool is presented and there is timeline of the evolution of the project. To download or read the magazine, please click here .
The Hoffselva River in Oslo, Norway, flows through an increasingly populated and urbanized area. As an important natural element in the urbanized environment of the lower catchment part, Hoffselva River provides recreational services, which are affected by the water quality. Along the river there are several combined sewer overflow facilities, shortly called CSO’s. During heavy rain events, they discharge untreated water with a high content in sewage garbage and particles as well as nitrogen and phosphorus into the river.
